Development Academy Winter Showcase Wraps Up With 88 Games Played in Two Days in Frisco, Texas FRISCO, Texas (Feb. 18, 2008) – FRISCO, Texas (Feb. 18, 2008) – The U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase concluded Monday after 88 games were played over two days at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. More than 150 college coaches joined 16 U.S. Soccer Federation scouts, including U.S Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley, to observe the most elite youth soccer talent in the country.
“We were extremely pleased with the competition during the Winter Showcase,” said U.S. Soccer Development Academy Director John Hackworth. “This was the first exposure to the Academy for many of the clubs, and in addition to great competition we were able to reinforce in person the principles on which the Development Academy was founded. This event was a tremendous step, and it’s only the beginning of the process. The Development Academy is only six months old and already we are starting to see results.”
Under-15/16 Met Oval’s Brian Pereira scored a last-minute goal to lift his team to victory over CASA in one of the first games of the day. Alexander Barbosa opened the scoring in the eighth minute for Met Oval, but Chris Litzler pulled CASA even in the 70th minute. With just seconds left, Pereira tallied the game-winner in Met Oval’s 2-1 win.
In other U-15/16 action, Kevin Pinkos’ goal in the fourth minute would be all Vardar would need to top Arsenal, 1-0. Vardar picked up its first Academy win, after a 2-0 loss to Albertson on Sunday evening and a draw with Virginia Rush on Feb. 10.
Chris Agorsor scored three goals for the Under-17/18 Baltimore Bays in a 4-0 victory over FC Milwaukee. After a scoreless first half, Agorsor broke through just two minutes after the second-half whistle with his first goal. He added another in the 57th minute, and three minutes later completed his hat trick. Christian Barreiro rounded out the scoring for Baltimore for the 4-0 final.
A back-and-forth battle through the first half erupted into a 5-2 victory for the U-17/18 Irvine Strikers against Ohio’s Internationals SC. David Lapinsky scored just two minutes into the game for Internationals, but Martin Soto answered back for Irvine in the ninth minute. Seconds later, Michael Dobriansky put Internationals back on top with a goal, but Oscar Reyes-Zarate leveled the score at two in the 26th minute. The game opened up for Irvine in the second half, as Eric Rodriguez tallied in the 58th minute, and Kyle Holloman scored two minutes later. Reyes-Zarate scored his second of the day in the 68th minute to make the final score 5-2.
Along with the action on the fields, Studio 90 and the Youth National Team blog were on hand all weekend at the Showcase with interviews and access to 8,000 square foot players’ lounge. Additionally, video highlights of each game and photos, which are available for purchase, can be found at ussoccer.com.
